Design palette Goenka- Project: Luharuka House

Design Palette Goenka is a first-of-its-kind material library and interior design studio based in Bangalore. Ameeshi Goenka founded DPG after gaining extensive experience in space design and material specifications, having worked with renowned retail design firm FRDC in Bangalore and residential design firm StudioWB in Kolkata.

Today, let us take a look at project Luharuka designed by them in Kolkata. It is a 3 BHK home designed in boutique style.

Client's brief: To have a simple yet stylish 3BHK home in Alipore Park Place, Kolkata

Duration: The renovation process from designing to execution took a period of five months from April to August in 2021. 

Budget: Their budget of 20lakhs was justified with the materials used and the service provided.

Design Elements: The design language follows that of a boutique hotel wherein the mood setting is neutral, shapes and forms are linear and a splash of colours to highlight certain elements in each space. The lighting is simple and a warm white tone allows the residents to feel relaxed but not lazy. The interior décor of the space is bold and vibrant but kept to a minimum.

Let us visit each portion of the home and take a look at how it has been executed.

Foyer : This home welcomes us with a full length application of bevelled square silver mirrors with comfortable furniture for sitting with a colourful patterned upholstery. A combination of natural and artificial planters gives a warm feeling and is easy to maintain.

Fabric rafters and lighting that suitably enhances it

Living room: The living room directly invites the guests to its cozy seating arrangement and a small decorative coffee table in the center. The bright shades on the cushions and canvas paintings highlight the space, giving it a chic touch. Every member of the Luharuka family is a staunch believer of Sri Sri Ravishankar which made the feature element in their living area as opposed to the TV unit in most households. Along with fabric rafter panels and elegant drop lighting on either side the celebration of The Guruji has come to life! 

Minimalistic pooja corner

Pooja: An open small wall mounted unit is created which is simple, blends with the background and extremely functional in day to day usage. With a glass surface on top, it makes it very easy to clean.

Daughter’s Bedroom: The colour white dominates this bedroom with a splash of beige shade on the bed heard-board and wardrobes. A small corner is perfectly utilized to create a productive study area too. The TV unit is quite simple and convenient and is accented by black rafters next to it.  The full height mirror in the bedroom is perfect for a lady who enjoys dressing up, additionally helps the bedroom look even more spacious than usual. The quiet dead corner between the doors is specially treated with an indoor planter and a decorative hanging light which increases the aesthetic value of the space and adds a sense of freshness and life.

Master Bedroom: The drawing factor of this room is the vintage wallpaper in a modern setting bedroom. The wallpaper is used as a back-splash of the bed with textured glass rafters on either side of the headboard. The full height laminated wardrobes and the full height mirror exaggerates the height of the bedroom. The bedroom lighting in the step false ceiling adds drama to the space while maintaining high luminescence.

Features of this project that impressed me is how well the aesthetic value is maintained while keeping the functional side intact. A no -fuss, easy to maintain space keeping the clients requirement in mind is the strength of this project designed by Design Plaette Goenka.

Certain other elements that I particularly liked is the usage of full length mirror in the foyer that gives a spacious look to the area and the pooja unit. This helps the residents to offer their prayers  but keep it simple and aesthetic at the same time.

From House to Home- Manisha Kapoor's residence

A thing of beauty is joy forever! - John Keats

This rings absolutely true every time, you visit Manisha's home in Central Mumbai. From converting the house to a warm and vibrant home, it took Manisha about 6 months to do up the interiors completely. She took her time, was in no hurry because she had imagined a certain look for her home and wanted to turn her imagination into reality.

Her family of five, including her two adorable dogs occupy this space, which is contemporary but with a touch of traditional elements like brass and wood.
As, I take you, through a visual treat, you will agree that 'modern marries the traditional' is followed through out, with one area effortlessly merging with the other.

I discovered her home in a facebook group and was itching since then to showcase her space to all. So, here we go...

The entrance...

Does the not so neutral colour scheme surprise you? well...this is what pushed me, to give her home a second glance because i understand that when you choose a dark coloured wall paper, the onus of carrying off this look is not easy!

I asked Manisha,on how she finalised on this. And this is what she had to say,

"While we had always wanted a slightly darkish grey look, we only got the confidence to go really dark when we picked the wall paper for my daughter’s room (silver-black) and then the matching paint with it. We tried a lighter grey but it just didn’t look good with the wall paper. So we went dark, with a little apprehension, but once we put a patch on the wall, we were convinced how gorgeous it looked.

I went through so many pinterest  pics to convince myself, and eventually just decided to take the plunge. Am so glad because everything really stands out against a dark color. In fact, my designer who was helping me, also said that she had never done anything dark like this, and she was so glad that I took the decision. We have a lot of natural light in our home, and also high ceilings, so we could carry off dark walls very well I feel."

Moving on to the living room...

There is a bold use of colours and patterns. And a confident putting together of disparate things that go together. The final effect is impactful, elegant and inviting.  Friends and family who have visited have immediately been enthralled by the interiors, and  are noticing every single detail.

There is gold leaf bordering done on the wall that run through out and sandpapered to create a distressed wooden look.

Bedroom Goals  

I found it difficult to rest my eyes on one particular object, such is the impactful presence of bold n beautiful elements in all her bedrooms, whether it is the classic wooden jaali worked cots, the banana botanical on the walls or the subtly laid flooring giving a very cohesive look to the entire set up.

Manisha says, "I believe that design is successful when every detail is thought through. This doesn’t mean that every single thing has to be totally coordinated as that makes things very flat. At the end of the day, a home represents your past, present and future and everything in your home should say the story of your life.

Everyday when you get back to your house, it must feel like home. Comforting, pleasing  to look at, and functional for smooth living.

Anuradha Singh's living room tour

We have Anuradha with us today, showing off her warm and cosy living room. She is  from Noida and works with a NGO. Anuradha shares this beautiful home with her husband, son (who is currently  studying in London) and her adorable dog Busty.

 A neutral palette, furniture that supports comfortable living with clean, simple lines and accessories that lend a very earthy feel is the USP of her living room.

Fine detailing often enhances any space. The cushions, runner, floor rugs, throws and the wall covering takes the decor to the next level.

Lighting plays a very important role to make a home look warm and cosy and Anuradha sure has got them covered in her space. Floor lamps, table lamp and the lights on the wall gives a lived in feel to the whole set up.

Anuradha says, 'I love Indian design, colors & patterns. My home reflects my passion for traditional Indian style. I love changing the arrangement of my house based on occasions and I believe my home is ever-evolving in terms of  decor.'

 This book shelf is ultimate goal for book lovers and decor aficionados alike! The key to a great bookshelf is arranging the books according to its dimension, colour and genre. Always make sure to add interesting decor elements to go with the books. Small, quirky pieces, your travel souvenirs are great accompaniments to your book shelf. This zone can be further accentuated by including plants and floor lighting. The entire ambience then conspires you to pick up a book and atleast leaf thru it! That's the power of a good reading corner.

Console styling at its best: A runner is the most essential piece while styling your console. Then you can place decor accents that are meaningful and close to your heart. Grouping together elements helps to think of it as a composition, created to draw your attention through the area. Seeing the same colors, design patterns and shapes on the console gives it a cohesive design.The rule of three is used in interior design to create interest, rhythm and depth.

Maadhumita's home in Singapore

I know, i shall fall short of words while describing this home, which belongs to Maadhumita, but i comfort myself, that indeed, the beautiful images  need no explanation!

Maadhumita's home boasts of a global appeal with its aesthetics deeply rooted in our Indian culture. Everything seamlessly falls into place.This is something I loved about her home. There is a perfect balance of comfort and style that makes the decor seem simple yet sophisticated! Every corner is well thought of in detail but it still doesn't seem to be decorated just for the sake of it!

Over to Maadhumita now...

"We have been living in Singapore for more than three decades now. This house has been our home for the last six years. It has three bedrooms overlooking a swimming pool and has a large living and dining area. The two balconies are small and but they nurture my plants.

You will notice I prefer white or pastel shades for my walls or furniture. The colours in the rooms come from the paintings, cushions, flowers, plants, and the carpets."

Little, pretty stuff that makes the dining area

 "I grew up watching my mother maintaining and embellishing a beautifully decorated home. There were always fresh flowers and a variety of plants that left a huge impression on me. I love antique furniture and artifacts. I still scout around for ancient items."

In love with those black n white frames

The hexagonal table with a marble top is an antique piece picked  up from a narrow congested bylane selling old items in Kolkata.

  Even simple things such as these door stoppers which have been stuck on the side of a bookcase add to the vibrancy of the home.

That Maadhumita loves antique pieces and she carries a charm of effortlessly working around them is evident from this image which houses her Chinese rice container and a lamp which are very old and are her prized possessions. The brass planter paan dan belonged to her grandmother and she says, it must have come down to her from the 19th century.

 She has used the rice container as a side table  and the ancient lamp and paan-daan atop that. It makes for a wonderful sight! Isnt it?

Simple Indian folk-art, nothing expensive used in her decoration

She goes onto mention, ' I even have a few Picasso prints picked up from one of my trips which hang in the guest bathroom. I used simple IKEA frames for them. We, meaning my husband, my daughter and I usually buy works of unknown artists. 
My husband and my daughter are the artists in the family. They speak through their films, art and writings. I have some of my daughter’s works on the walls. I am the one who just sits back and enjoys their work.'

Moving on to her bedrooms...

Bedrooms are also in muted and pastel shades. The master bedroom is mostly in black and white but the colour is from a Kandinsky print that they picked up in Amsterdam.

 Guest bedroom... And these botanicals have been done by Maadhumita herself.

The kitchen, where she feels she doesn't have any set rules. I adored those quotes which add a quirk to the whole set up. It lends visual appeal to the space. Every corner is made interesting, just with the addition of kitchen essentials.

One day, Maadhumita plans to return to India and is currently trying to finish doing up her home in Kolkatta. And when that happens, it will be equally interesting to feature her home once again!
