Styled with warmth & passion-the home of Swetha Sajjalgud

 We have come to the end  of yet another year and let us bid adieu with a bang! How about a visual treat  covering the home tour of Swetha's home.

Swetha Sajjalgud and her husband Mayank, live in Bangalore with their 16 month old baby girl in a 3 bhk apartment. She works as a product manager in an MNC and states that with a full time job and a toddler, giving time to the house and its upkeep becomes challenging.

But, you will soon realize that Swetha has managed to create a cosy heaven for herself and family in spite of being time challenged and this can happen only when you have an underlying passion for decor.

The living area where we entertain guests and spend most of the time is the cynosure in Swetha's home is what I believe.

She has sent us some images of her drawing room over a period of time. Just a little variation in  the arrangement of cushions and decor accents, and you can make out how it never ceases to impress!

I loved the earthy tones in her home. The solid wood furniture and the warmth extended thru the various fabric shades keeps you gazing at the cosy set up.

Minimalistic , functional and user friendly furniture with the right dosage of decor elements thrown  around, in a brightly lit space is the safest route to a splendid home! And Swetha seems to have decoded this mantra!!!


Swetha says, "My inspiration for my design sense and aesthetics comes from my mom. She has always had this great taste when it comes to doing up a home and as a child i would watch wide eyed as she would go scouting for upholstery or knick- knacks for the home. Her design sense is mostly Indian and our home used to be mostly setup in bright earthy tones. Even today, when I visit my parents in Pune, i end up shamelessly stealing some brass knick knacks from my mum's place.

I would also like to mention that I am hugely inspired and in awe of some talented Indian decor bloggers Archana Srinivas (Rang Decor), Shruti Singh ( The east coast desi), Chandan Dubey (I am fortunate to own some of her creations), Shivangi Dogra  and Kamini Raghavan ( Saffron and silk) its a pity she doesnt blog as much nowadays, but she is a huge inspiration."

Let us hear what Swetha's has to share about her design sensibility...

"I have been very fortunate to have a husband who supports my passion for decor. He is the man behind the lens who takes these great shots of our home.We love travelling a lot and i make it a point to get something for the home wherever we go.Our home has a lot of pieces we picked on our various travels in India and across the globe. I generally lean towards warm and earthy tones, because that is the kind of setup i grew up in and it reminds me of my parent's home. My design inspiration is mostly Indian and we have invested in dark solid wood furniture sourced from Fabindia and Mother earth across the home. I believe it tends to give the home a warm and cozy vibe. I tend to keep the upholstery neutral, so i that i can play around with colorful accents. The antique bench at the entry way is from Oshiwara in Mumbai. It was a huge task having it transported from Mumbai to Bangalore given that it was antique and I had my heart in my mouth when the packers unpacked it as i was so afraid that it would have been roughly handled in transport and it would be damaged ! The Pichwai painting was a gift and i totally love the colour combination and how it makes a plain white background stand out.The pictures above the sofa are prints of the tholu bommalata ( leather puppet art) which i picked from Karnataka chitra kala parishat in Bangalore. The brass vessels belonged to my grandparents which i have converted into planters.

The hanging bell and lamp are brass which my mom gifted . The angels are from Netherlands and Prague . The Gouri mukut is from Chor bazar in Mumbai."

 It is  relatively easier to collect beautiful, heartwarming knick knacks for your home but requires passionate effort to display the same in a manner that entices all.

  The  white and blue bedroom is this guest room and the three small paintings above the bed are water color postcards from Pondicherry.

The master bedroom cum study is also blue themed with blue pottery from Jaipur above the side table and ceramics from Prague.

This is the third room which is work in progress where in Swetha is trying to create a fun room for her baby girl.

This yellow trunk in the patio is a DIY and it gives a nice bright feel coupled with the greens.

The conclusion i make from this home tour is, that if one wants to have a traditional Indian inspired home, earthy colour tones and finish can never go wrong!

That cosy,dreamy home!

 I have always been very selective about the homes that we feature here on sajavat. Spaces that convey the personality of the home owner are my kind of spaces! The home that I bring for you today, drew my instant attention.

Asha's home has a strong Indian element to it but somewhere I could see that she has a very global approach when it comes to designing her space. Asha currently resides in the silicon vallley of India.
Being an avid traveler, nature lover and a decor enthusiast her design style is earthy and nature inspired with a love for unique, hancrafted artifacts and textiles.She believes good design be truly global where art and craft from all over the world blend seamlessly. 

Let us invite ourselves to her abode and you will appreciate how she has kept it simple, a no-fuss decor simultaneously creating a zen like atmosphere for her loving folks.The home boasts of a traditional Kerala style architecture

Her living area  has a very beautiful earthy feel to it with sofas made of banana fibre. The wall decor has a striking mural with the wooden spoon holder on either sides.  A tribal art (mask) adorns another wall. If you are a keen observer you would have noticed a Buddha head, Madhubani basket , a bowl with some green arrangement placed on the shelf in the corner.

Another beauty that caught my eye is the wooden palankuzhi, a traditional game placed on the centre table.Asha says it has found an alternative use and she decks it up as a tea light holder too!

Her furniture are a mix of earthy, rustic wood and natural materials like cane and bamboo.

Her textiles are a collection from their various travels across Indonesia, Thailand, different places in India and good old Ikea. As you can make out Asha loves dhurries and tries to use them wherever possible. These kilim cushions she tell me, are from AmazonIndia

This home is very well laid out and Asha and her family have the luxury of  a central courtyard and a lovely garden and beautiful verandahs with red oxide flooring. She feels blessed to have found this place that has embraced their furniture and her design sensibilities.

Now, isn't that a wonderful piece? I had seen this boat shaped furniture piece used as a  seater in a hotel in Tanjore recently. Here Asha has used it as a bar cabinet.

A very Indian baithak . The coffee table that you see is an old door that has been re purposed.This whole setting gives a very zen like feel. As is evident by now Asha loves pottery and collects them in all shapes and forms.

 

I remember drooling over the next image when I first saw this in Pinterest. These cushions are from Chiang mail in Thailand.

 The next few images are from her verandah and outdoor spaces.They are sure to cast a spell on you. The thatched roof, red oxide flooring, greens and other knick knacks in the form of pottery, masks,wall art and the plantation chair, (how can I ever miss mentioning that! )are all tell tale signs of the classy decor that Asha enjoys in her home!

I wouldn't mind sitting here all day, doing nothing but day dreaming! I know, you all want to join me too!

Again, the Buddha here is a very special one, made of stone and  bought from Singapore which travels with them whenever they move houses.

I love her bedrooms with fabrics taking the centre stage.If you are lucky enough to own a four poster bed, you need not accessorize your bedroom with anything else! Who else agrees with me ?

A home set in Earthy tones

Home tours are the most loved segment in sajavat. So let's start the New Year with another beautiful home, decorated with love and care!

This home is the love nest of Snigdha residing in Ghaziabad with her hubby and two wonderful kids. They have often moved places within India and therefore she has a strong inclination towards all things Indian. Something that i loved in her home is the earthy feel spilling all over!

The dark wooden textures combined with an aesthetic sense inclining towards natural living , the home is one where you would want to come back to, everyday, after a tiring day spent out!
After all every home should have that casting spell on you! what say?

The dark wood tones, hues of  orange and the greens all come together harmoniously. There is a visual continuity that strikes in this home. Every element is in sync with the other!

 Prints and patterns on the fabrics, wood grained textures from the various furnitures, the ceramics and pots with greens are the main elements that lend this Earthy tone in her space.For all those who love such homes pay attention to these little details to create a similar decor scheme.Going natural is another key to such homes.

Creating table vignettes: Importance is given to the accent pieces on the table and also to knicks knacks hung on to the wall which is at one's eye level.When you have an assortment of pieces, group them together taking a cue from Snigdha. The tray is used here to place jars and other table essentials together.This way the table does not seem crowded too!

Another trick to highlight a single frame on the wall, is to hang, other eye catchy elements that go with it! For example here Snigdha pairs a frame of deity with an equally stunning brass Ganesha deepam and a lotus incense holder..Similar stuff hung together!

Remember kitchen jars can be arranged on the bedside table as flower holders and planters too! Also, keep changing the vignettes on the bed side console and you create a new decor every time!

A very functional bedroom decor yet very classy!

What more do you need if you have a balcony, some greens around, a pretty sit out and a cuppa to go with it?Absolute bliss I say!
