Resolutions for the coming year

Are you the type of person who makes resolutions every year and strictly follows them or you make them to break them or the one who doesn't believe in this at all?

Well, am somewhere in between. I don't make it every year but this year I have made a promise and am genuinely going to try and implement it too!

As a decor fanatic, often we tend to hoard stuff. A visit to a mall, an exhibition, gifts and the list is endless. Think of all those trips that we take every 4-5 months, yes, travel souvenirs... we do tend to be carried away and bring home some small decor knick-knack.The process of accumulation begins and before we realize we have so many elements and so limited space. Of course, we don't have a mansion to accommodate, store or display them all and I detest to have a cluttered home. So, keeping all of the above in mind, I have just made some resolution.

1. Not everything that you like or fall in love with, should be bought home. Resist as much as possible. Most men I know are good at window-shopping. Be like Men....
Difficult, I know...but am going to give this a try!

2 Don't get bored with your old stuff. Try to give them a makeover.Well, soon you will realize that am going to give you a sneak peak of a small makeover done some time back!

3.Keep rotating your decor accessories, that way you will not find them repetitive. I have mentioned this point in many of my earlier posts too.The importance of rotation can really be not overemphasized!

This is a lamp that I love but the shade is plain.Few months back I thought of buying a new one but then there was another thought to give the old one a new look

A few hours worth effort, white paint and a south Indian pulli-kolam ( Rangoli with dots), I managed to give this a new look.

A close up shot...

How do you find this?

Let me see if am able to stick on to my resolution.Well, for all you folks, have a memorable Christmas and a Happy New year. Have great fun with your loved ones!

Couple of posts for this year will follow soon. These posts are specially designed keeping in mind that as a decor blogger, I must also provide you with relevant information to help you make informed choices and keep you abreast with all home related products available in the market, because decor isn't only about luxury and elegance it is also about comfort and convenience!

So keep coming here for your regular dose of decor-mantra!

A DIY and a plant holder for adding the oomph to your green decor

If a small balcony or lack of enough space is a hindrance to no-green corner at your home, bother not! because I have an easy DIY for you which will help you hold your planters in style and since it is hanging and takes up only vertical space, you can incorporate it just about anywhere...even in the windows, between the grills yes practically anywhere.

and no the raw materials aern't many...some jute rope, S-hook, ring colour(optional) and that's about it ...

Step 1: Take 4 strings of jute each of about 2 metre lengths. Dip it in a basin of crimson colour for about 15 minutes and let it dry well. Pass it through the ring. Now you have 8 strings of jute. Tie it into a knot.

Step 2: Separate the 8 strings into 4 sets, such that we have 2 strings in each set. Leave a gap of about 15cm after the main knot.  Now, make a knot in each set.

Step 3: Leave a gap of about 15 cms again. This gap depends on the height of your planter... Now, pair a string from one set with a string from the other set and tie it into a knot.

Step 5: Combine all the 8 strings again into a knot. Now you have the base ready for inserting the first pot.

Step 6: Repeat the above steps to make base for the second tier. Your innovative vertical plant holder is ready. Hang it in your balcony or in your window sil with the help of an s-hook that you can easily get from a hardware shop and enjoy the presence of greens in your home. You can make many such holders and also have the option of making a 2 tier or a 3 tier plant holder.

All these knots may give you feel of a difficult DIY but believe me as you sit down with the ropes and keep following the instruction, it is a super simple project. For increasing the glam quotient, try inserting beads before you make a knot each time!
Do try and let me know how it turned out.

Home tour : Shilpa Kulkarni's home Part 2

After a visual treat of Shipla Kulkarni's home part 1, let me show you around her bedrooms and her green space. As I was telling you the other day, her home is like a cosy nest where the birds come to retire after a hard day's work. The warmth reflects through all the images. You just cannot miss it!

The master bedroom

The beauty lies in detailing.Every piece just fits in the decor scheme so elegantly. Do you see the curtains below? They are embroidered ones bought from Ikea.

By the bedside...
An assortment of collectibles...
Those wooden combs have been placed so thoughtfully, the radio, books, pothos or for that matter the Kathakali dancer placed together...every item so different from the other, yet when they come together evoke magic.Don't you feel so?

Kids room

The kid's room is always short of space but I loved the way she has done up her son's room creating space for essentials, play and storage

that is an old saree there...

Let us take a peek inside her balcony...casually placed greens in terracotta and ceramics interspersed with decor accessories tells us about her inherent love for earthy elements.

Chitchatting in the greens...
The meditative corner...

Now, we come to an end of this perfect home tour. Someone on facebook commented that it is a very unpretentious home and that's true to the core ! I felt an instant connect and loved every bit of it! What about you?

Home Tour- Vibrant home of Shilpa Kulkarni

On a rainy evening as I lay, curled up on the couch with the laptop and the mandatory coffee, skipping and hopping from one blog to another, I came across the blog 'A sprinkle of this and a dash of that' That was the first time, when I lost count of  time in her blog and I read one post after the other. She has a way with her words and I absolutely fell in love with her posts.

Not only her words but her decor style too, caught my attention.Very Indian, simple yet mesmerizing if I have to describe her taste...She is' Shilpa Kulkarni', a journalist , blogger, freelancer and a doting mother of two kids.Today we are going to invite ourselves to her lovely and lively abode!

There are so many corners and countless vignette to which I want to draw your attention upon, that I finally decided to do a two post story of her home.Without much ado, lets just get inside...

Her living room lends a very warm Indian appeal.

I love homes, where you can sense the passion of the home maker and if you look closely enough every vignette will speak its own story.

At the entrance...

The pillar is her lucky find from 'Chor bazaar'
Oh ! how we all love paintings of our very own Dithi Mukherjee
And this work is Shilpa's tribute to Dithi
Shilpa loves to paint and to fulfill her childhood dream ,she has also taken to kathak recently. This is what I meant when I said 'Passionate'.To put your heart and soul into anything you take upon whether it is dancing, painting or for that matter decorating one's space .Her home fully resonates her belief in the rustic and ethnic form of decorating.

The curtains are customised to suit her tastes!

The 'thallaiaatu bommai' or the dancing doll

I noticed that her space is filled with an interesting mix of traditional art work in varied hues. Souvenirs from her trips across the country are lovingly displayed. Her hubby jokingly calls their home a mini 'dastkar mela'. But jokes apart, Shilpa's home amazingly carries the tag of 'Indianness' in true glory!

Let me take you on a ride through the various vignettes she has created around her home.

One of her drawing again!

Shadow art!

A teak window that displays her jhumkaas

DIY: Lights on a bamboo stick

The kitchen too is adorned with knick-knacks that one would simply love to gaze at. Have a peep...

It simply says..."Welcome to the kitchen"

Eye catchy assortment of tin cans, brass dabbas ,boxes and kettles
We are yet to uncover her bedrooms and her green space but that I think shall save for the next post.Do you like what you see? I would love to hear from all of you.So be generous with your comments, folks and I shall see you soon with the second part of Shilpa's home tour soon.
